The Unique Tradition after Nyepi in Munduk

5:47 PM

Bali, always has its own way to celebrate something. It is now Nyepi day, the so-called New year for Çaka. It is 78 years later than the Christian calendar. This new year is celebrated in silence and the Balinese observe four obligations or called Catur Brata Penyepian, such as: Amati Geni, Amati Karya, Amati Lelanguan and Amati Lelungaan. Those literally mean do not ignite fire, do not work, do not have fun, and do not go outside. The earth will have 24-hours for taking a break, as well as we have time to engage with the nature. The good news is: We can clearly see the stars adorning the sky and the sounds of chirping bird soothing our soul!
The day after Nyepi, or called Ngembak Geni, literally means free of igniting fire. This is the very first day of Çaka New Year. On this day, people usually visit their relatives and friends to apologize and express gratitude. We believe that the brand new day of this new year must end in silence and contemplation as well as beginning with peace and happiness for the new hope.
Different from the other parts of Bali, Munduk holds unique tradition on this day, called 'Nyakan di rurung' or cooking on the street. It is started at the dawn from around 3 am until the sun rises. This tradition is a symbol in order to strengthen the relationship and harmony amongst the neighboorhood. After cooking, they usually offer and taste the dishes of one another. It is still preserved and inherited since long time ago, even the stove that is used is still the traditional one, dates back to hundred years ago.

After being abandoned since several years ago, this tradition can finally be encouraged again. People are more aware of preserving the indigenous culture. It is also inevitably because of the increasing numbers of tourists' visit. Local people start to feel necessary to maintain the local culture, since it is the potential source to be the magnet to attract more tourists.
